Championship average attendances and how Cardiff City compare to Swansea City, Leeds United and rivals

Cardiff City have enjoyed a solid season so far, but how do their home attendances compare to those of their Championship rivals? The Bluebirds’ home attendances have usually been above 20,000 since moving to the Cardiff City Stadium back in 2009.

Promotion-chasing and Premier League seasons have certainly boosted those figures, but attendances have usually been between the 20,000-22,000 mark, even during some of the tougher seasons. This season has been a more than respectable one so far.

Most expected City to struggle in a campaign that follows a near-disastrous season of last when the Bluebirds were the closest they have been to relegation to League One sinc earriving in the second tier all the way back in 2003.

Add to that a manager inexperienced in the Championship in Erol Bulut, and, on paper, there is a clear recipe for disaster. But it hasn’t panned out that way so far, and Cardiff currently sit just three points away from the top six.

But how do their attendances compare to the rest of the division? Handily, FootballWebPages keep track of attendance figures, putting together an average across the season, and Cardiff are currently right around mid-table, in 13th spot with an average of 21,525.

Bristol City are currently just over 500 ahead, claiming the last mid-table spot, while Swansea City are as low as 22nd having put together an average attendance of just 16,122. For comparison, Rotherham United have the worst home attendance record with 10,672, but their stadium only holds just over 12,000 in total.

Sunderland lead the way with a sensational average of 40,994, which is more than the Cardiff City Stadium holds. Perhaps more predictably, the recently relegated Leeds United, Leicester City and Southampton come next, with promotion-contending Ipswich Town also right up there.
